Join in the new Pole Walking Group

20/03/2017

Seniors in Rockingham are finding a renewed vigour for physical activity with the introduction of a new pole walking group in Baldivis.

The Baldivis Pole Walking Group, supported by the City of Rockingham and the Rockingham Branch of the Seniors Recreation Council of WA, meets every Wednesday morning at Arpenteur Park and provides seniors with a way to increase their fitness through low impact exercise. Participants are provided poles to assist them with balance and endurance.

Walk Leader Gerry Ligtermoet used to be a regular cyclist and gym goer but a rare blood disorder, Amyloidosis, left him with low energy levels. He struggled to walk 1km with no aids but with poles can walk up to 5km.

“I recently started entering the weekly Rockingham parkrun, a 5km timed run, and now it takes me just under an hour to complete it using poles,” Mr Ligtermoet said. “I would encourage others to give pole walking a try because it not only helps with stability and mobility, it is a low-stress activity that works every major muscle group, and it is a safe, effective form of rehabilitation.”Baldivis Pole Walking Group Leader Gerry Ligtermoet leads the group on a morning walk at Arpenteur Park.

All community members are invited to join the free group which meets at 9am on Wednesdays at the grandstand at Arpenteur Park. The group walks laps of the park at a leisurely pace and then stops for morning tea. Poles are provided.
