Schools Banner Competition - Winners 2011
Date Published: 30/09/2011
Since 1998 the City of Rockingham has been working in partnership with local schools, creating colourful and memorable banners to adorn Read Street, one of the main thoroughfares of Rockingham.
Each year the banners create a striking and cheerful welcome to the City for visitors and locals alike.
The theme for 2011’s Act Belong Commit School Banner Competition was ‘Eat for Life’, which focuses on raising awareness on the benefits of healthy eating and allows young people to express their thoughts on the topic through art.
Between peer pressure and commercial television that is saturated with commercials for cheap and accessible fast food, it can be increasingly challenging for young people to make healthy food choices.
City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels, announced the winners of this year’s competition at a special awards ceremony last week: “Through design and painting workshops to create the banners young people are encouraged to think about their community and their place in it. Strengthening their relationship to and ownership of this place, helping them to become strong, responsible citizens.
“I would like to acknowledge the time and expertise contributed by the artists who have worked on the 2011 competition in schools this year. Thank you for your involvement; Lewis Horne, Anita Lorimer, Tich Dixon, Jodie Bolton, Elise Ward, Natassja Jones and Carol Clitheroe.
“We have been very lucky to have tremendous support from Healthway, who have provided significant resources to enable this project to continue. I would like to thank Healthway for their support as we look forward to continuing a close relationship with them on this and other youth art projects.
“Each year the competition is split into three categories - Lower Primary, Upper Primary and Middle School. The competition is reliant on volunteer judges who critique the banners on three judging criteria; Reflects Theme: Eat for Life; Clear Evidence of Student Participation and Overall Visual Appeal of Banner.
“The City would like thank Cr Leigh Liley and Gillian Peebles for donating their time to Judge the 2011 entries.
“Congratulations to the following schools for their fabulous entries, the winners of the
