School Banner Competition

Date Published: 14/06/2010

The awards ceremony for the City of Rockingham 2010 Act-Belong-Commit School Banner Competition will be held on Wednesday, 30th June from 4:30pm- 6pm in the Council Administration Building, Reception Room.

The City of Rockingham’s Annual School Banner Competition workshops took place in schools during Term 2. The program encourages local primary and high school students to design and paint 2 banners (3050mm x 1030mm) which will adorn Read Street from 5th July, Rockingham, creating a highly visible marker acknowledging the positive presence of young people in the community.
Each year the banners are themed along a specific line, to encourage participants to explore and reflect upon aspects of their lives and living in Rockingham. Participants are enabled to present their ideas and comments to the community through the imagery on their banners.
The theme for 2010 is BULLYING, NO WAY!

This theme focuses on creating awareness for young people and allows them to express their reaction of Bullying through art. The topic of Bullying is gradually becoming more known and is constantly being highlighted in the news. The theme works to break down the barrier of silence on this topic with young people.
A key part of the program is the provision of professional artists to operate within the classrooms, providing a vital resource for both the teachers and students. The schools were each allocated 10 hours with a resident artist. The artists assisted with visioning ideas, working with students to design the banners and guide the painting process.

Each participating school will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation in the program. At this ceremony the three schools receiving the trophy for the best banner in each category for the year will be announced.

The three categories are Junior Primary, Upper Primary and Secondary Schools

The judging criteria for judging the winning banners will be based on 4 main area's:
