Meals on Wheels

This service is designed specifically for members of the community who are unable to provide themselves with a nutritious, well balanced diet due to age, infirmity or disability. To join, you may request to be put on the program through yourself, a family member, your GP, a hospital or Community Care Facility (e.g Silver Chain or the Aged Care Assessment Team), if you meet the eligibility criteria.

What is the Meals on Wheels Service?

It is a nutritionally balanced meal program for older frail or younger people who have an ongoing disability, or their carers. The aim of the service is to help many of our community members continue living in their own homes, within familiar surroundings and neighbourhood networks, for as long as they are able to do so.

The meals served are prepared fresh daily and consist of:

  • Soup
  • Main Course
  • Fruit Juice
  • Dessert

Meals are delivered by a very capable team of volunteers between 8.00am and 11.00am Monday to Friday with extra meals provided for weekends. On Wednesdays and Sundays the meal normally consists of a roast dinner and on Friday a fish meal is served.

Does the service cater for special diets?

The service can provide meals for consumers who require special diets such as:

  • Diabetic
  • Low fat
  • Sodium free
  • Vegetarian
  • Blended
  • Acid free meals

If your diet is not listed please talk to us about your special needs.

How much does the service cost?

The current charge for Meals on Wheels is $6.00 per meal with the preference of meals to be paid for in advance. Accounts are also sent out monthly.

What you are required to do

If you are an existing Meals on Wheels consumer or are looking to join please ensure you follow these points:

  • Place a suitable container (ESKY) outside the front door to store the meal
  • Collect the meal from the container as soon as possible after delivery
  • Warm the meal as required, refrigerate or freeze as appropriate
  • Complete the payment envelope details and include the correct payment
  • HAND the payment envelope to the volunteer
  • Provide adequate notice in case of cancellation

As a consumer your input is encouraged and welcome. If you have a positive comment to make please don't hesitate to call us. Similarly if you have a concern with the meals service call administration so we may rectify the problem.

How do I join or find out more information?

Administration of the service is undertaken by the Meals on Wheels Coordinator who can be contacted on 9528 8560.

Intergenerational Programs

View the range of programs available for intergenerational interactivities:

Gone Fishing

The City of Rockingham's Gone Fishing program involves connecting a group of Rockingham seniors with a group of enthusiastic young people wanting to learn about fishing. The young people learn about the techniques of fishing, enjoy evening fishing sessions in various spots around Rockingham, learn how to cook their catch, and get the opportunity to make new friends and connect with some of the senior members of our community. The mentors get the opportunity to share their knowledge and connect with some of the younger members of the Rockingham community.

Each program involves 20 young people with the program time tabled to run twice a year at the beginning and end of summer, and is advertised in the local press.

Community Transport Services

In an effort to improve community transport services for transport disadvantaged people in Rockingham Council has launched four transport pilot programs. Three of the programs are designed to benefit the health, well being and support needs of young people, young families and people with a disability.

The fourth program provides access to a bus to people in Singleton and Golden Bay with no transport of their own who are unable to access regular public transport because of the distance of stops from their homes. The bus travels through the centre of the southern suburbs and delivers the clients to the Rockingham Shopping Centre for two hours of shopping fun, and then returns the tired shoppers home.

The service runs on pension Thursdays, with information regarding times and stops available from Carly Kroczek at the Council on 9528 0483. A gold coin donation is required.
