TravelSmart Maps

TravelSmart changes the way we travel for the better as it promotes walking, cycling and the use of cars while reducing our overwhelming reliance on cars.

What does TravelSmart mean for you?
  • Less congestion and better air quality
  • Improved health and fitness
  • Safer communities and streets
  • Vibrant cities and a better quality of life
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions
How do you get around?

Most people use the car. A travel survey of residents in the Perth Metropolitan Area found that 80% of trips were by car and most were by the driver alone. There are travel alternatives available in your local area and many good reasons to use them. By walking, cycling or using public transport you can reduce car trips and reap the benefits such as:

  • Personal savings from less car use
  • Improving your health through physical activity
  • Reducing local traffic and noise
  • Reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Reducing road crashes

TravelSmart Programs in the City of Rockingham

TravelSmart works with a number of groups to help people change their travel behaviour including schools, businesses, local government and community organisations.

TravelSmart Workplace

Staff at the City of Rockingham administration building are invited to assess how they travel to and from work, and how they can make some healthy changes. Staff are encouraged to car pool, use public transport or cycle to work. Other workplaces who are interested in taking part should see http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/travelsmart/14901.asp.

Bicycle Users Group (BUG)

Residents who cycle in Rockingham are invited to join the Rockingham BUG. This is an informal group who promote cycling issues and encourage others to get on their bikes!

What is a BUG?

A Bicycle User Group (BUG) is a group of people with shared interests and goals in relation to cycling, whose aim is to improve cycling conditions and opportunities in their local area. BUGs are usually made up of cyclists who enjoy bicycle riding for transport or recreation purposes and possess the necessary skills and enthusiasm to gain achievements for themselves and other cyclists.

Role of BUGs

BUGs vary in their role, depending on the size, skills and needs of the group but their main aim is to improve local cycling through;

  • Providing a local forum for cyclists to discuss cycling related issues and progress cycling matters as a united group
  • Working with local government to provide better facilities and safer routes for commuter and recreational cyclists
  • Promoting the benefits of cycling with an aim to encourage others to cycle, through promoting social rides and having displays at local festivals and community events
  • Developing strategies to improve cycling in their vicinity
  • Becoming involved in transport planning and policy decision-making process for infrastructure improvements
RoBUG - Who are we?

The RoBUG is a newly formed group of people who like to ride in Rockingham. We're community members who are interested in improving cycling conditions, and with the support of the local government would like to further promote cycling as a great way to have fun, stay healthy and get around our City.

What do we do?

As the RoBUG has just formed we are still deciding. Lobbying for improved cycling facilities, holding events and working with the local government are high priorities.

We need you!

If you would like to be involved or would just like to receive email updates of cycling-related news in Rockingham, please contact the TravelSmart Officer on 9528 0490 or .

Other cycling information

Information on other BUGs around Perth can be found on the Bicycle Transport Alliance website at www.btawa.org.au.

For more information on cycling in WA see the Department for Planning and Infrastructure's website at http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/1515.asp.

Speed Advisory Unit

The City of Rockingham manages two units that alert drivers of their speed and these are currently being taken out to all primary schools as an educational tool. Students can watch cars passing the school and note the speed on the unit, which will help them to identify when it is safe to cross the road. The Rockingham Roadwise Advisory Committee meets at the Council Offices monthly to discuss local road safety issues.

Walking School Bus

The Walking School Bus is a popular way of encouraging young children to walk to school together.  It works like a motorised bus picking up passengers along the way at designated bus stops, with parent volunteers supervising the students walking to school. In Western Australia, the Walking School Bus model is coordinated through the Department for Planning and Infrastructure's TravelSmart Program. For more information please see http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/travelsmart/14915.asp .

The TravelSmart Officer can also support schools and community groups who want to take part in events such as Cycle Instead Bike Week in March and Walk There Today Week in November.
