How Does Council Make Decisions

Council is represented by a Mayor and nine Councillors, who look after the interests of the Community. The Mayor and Councillors, with their wealth of experience and commitment serve to meet the requirements of the community at all times and are readily available to residents. Decisions are made through the following avenues:

  • The Committee System
How decisions are initially agreed upon between Council staff and Councillors.
  • Council Elections
Find out when the next ordinary election is due to be held.
  • Council Meetings
Council receive questions from the public during these monthly meetings.

The Committee System

Much of Council's business is handled by three standing committees which meet monthly. The Committees comprise of four Councillors who review reports presented by Council officers, on a wide variety of topics.

Committee recommendations are placed before the monthly meetings of full Council for formal debate. Council may accept these recommendations, change them, or send them back to the appropriate committee for further consideration.

Correspondence from individuals or organisations which cannot be handled through the routine processes and policies of Council is referred to the appropriate committee through an officers report.

Council Elections

Ordinary elections for Council are held every two years.

Electoral Roll

Council Electoral Rolls close in the March (or in the August if the ordinary election day is moved from May to October) prior to a Council election.

If you are an owner or occupier of rateable property within the City of Rockingham, and meet the eligibility criteria, you are entitled to be enrolled to vote at Council elections. If you are enrolled on the State electoral roll as living at the relevant address in Rockingham then you are automatically included on the Local Government roll.

However, if you are an owner or occupier of a Rockingham property and you are enrolled on the State roll as living outside the District, or if you are not on any other roll but meet the eligibility criteria, enrolment is no longer automatic so you must apply to be placed on the local roll by lodging an enrolment form at the City of Rockingham Administration. There are several provisions which relate to occupiers of property and to persons who are not enrolled on the State rolls.

Please note that if you are unsure of your eligibility status please contact Council Administration well in advance of any Council election.

Council Meetings

Council meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6:00pm (always confirm before attending as times can change without notice) and the public are welcome to attend. View the next Council Meeting Date.
